Give all a reason to be thankful

Thanksgiving2

Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School, Blackstone, MA, honors the Season of Giving by giving all a reason to be thankful.  In between the everyday studies that fill the minutes of our normal middle schoolers’ days, groups of students and staff have been making time to talk about ways to bring some added joy to others this upcoming holiday season.

Our 6th Grade Mathematics classes have been engaged in a study of decimals in which greater meaning has been brought to the standards through loose change collection bins in class.  This loose change is being collected to purchase 38 holiday baskets for Thanksgiving that contain all of the traditional fixins’ complete with a whole turkey.  The baskets and turkeys are being distributed to families in our school community.

Not only do these students feel the spirit of giving, but they have also learned many lessons in preparation for this culminating event.  Budgeting skills have been tightly woven into this curricular study that emphasizes the practical application of math in the students’ day to day lives. From working within a budget, to calculating costs of items, to preparing and shopping for a family, the students are being equipped with a skill set that they will use long after they leave the classroom. In addition, it will hopefully provide students with a greater appreciation for what their parents/guardians do on a regular basis, especially during these tough economic times.

Blackstone- Millville High School Goal Getters in Action

FWH-Students

The Blackstone- Millville Regional High School students are making connections with the Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School students in a unique way. During each 6th grade wellness rotation, Mr. Richard Porter, principal at BMRHS, sends a student to speak to the students. The high school students come to the middle school as a culminating activity at the end of the Goal Setting unit. The 2 high school speakers who have presented have received rave reviews from their 6th grade audience. There is excitement brewing as 6th graders talk about who from the high school will present when it is their turn to take wellness.

Tyler Plante spoke to the students during the first rotation. At that time he emphasized the importance of setting goals, and shared about the difference between setting goals and simply dreaming of what might be.  Tyler spoke about setting both long- term and short- term goals, and urged the students to become “goal- getters.” Tyler spoke about keeping oneself motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible. He advised the students to recognize their own strengths and good qualities. He advised them to seek help from others when they get overwhelmed. Tyler told the class that life is a process of setting goals, taking actions steps toward the goal, reaching goals, and starting all over again.

Stacia Tympanick recently spoke to Mrs. Michele Blanchard’s second 6th grade wellness rotation class on the importance of setting goals.

Stacia Tympanick

Using a PowerPoint Presentation,  Stacia shared with the students ways in which goals can help one succeed. She urged the students to believe in themselves, and to remember their values when making choices. As part of goal setting she reminded the students to overcome obstacles, and to seek the help of parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, siblings, and friends. She told the students that goals are worth having because “They get you places and give your life purpose.”  Stacia talked about the importance of learning to manage time and she talked about the importance of being self motivated and involved in school. Stacia told the class, “It is not worth wasting your time doing things that won’t get you anywhere.” Stacia is a good student, an athlete, a class officer,

works 2 jobs and is excited about attending either Bridgewater State College or Assumption College in September to study pre- law. Stacia concluded her presentation by saying, “Ask anyone who is successful, and they’ll tell you that they set realistic goals for themselves and worked hard to reach those goals.”

Ask anyone who heard Stacia or Tyler’s presentations or ask anyone who knows Tyler Plante and Stacia Tympanick, and they will tell you that Tyler and Stacia are successes!
